Membership Recruitment and Renewal Letters
The following sample
letters are intended as guidelines on what type of letters you need to write
and what type of information to include in letters you use in recruiting and
renewing local memberships.
Sample letter to new
inquiries:
Dear
____________,
The Libertarians of Macomb County is an affiliate
organization of the Libertarian Party of Michigan. The goals of our group are
to promote the Libertarian philosophy, to be politically active within our
community, to elect Libertarian candidates to office, to uphold the rights of
individuals, and to encourage new membership in our organization. We rely on
our membership to fund and coordinate all of our activities. We meet on the
second Wednesday of each month to socialize and to work towards accomplishing
our goals at the Fire Escape Restaurant in Mt. Clemens between 6:00 and 9:00
p.m. A guest speaker addresses our meeting about every other month. It's really
quite refreshing and invigorating to gather with such informed and like-minded
individuals!
A recent edition of our quarterly newsletter, The LMC News,
is enclosed to inform you of what we're doing and upcoming events that we'll
either be attending or sponsoring. A calendar of events, related news, contact
information, and a membership application are also in the newsletter.
You will receive the next issue of our newsletter and monthly meeting
reminders for the next couple of meetings. After that, we ask for a donation of
$10 to help cover costs. Of course, I hope that you'll send in your membership
application right away and let us know that you support what we are doing (at
all levels - national, state and county!). And then I hope to meet you at an
upcoming meeting. In the meantime though, please don't hesitate to contact me
if you have any questions or if you would like any additional
information.
I'm looking forward to meeting you soon!
Yours for
freedom,
Stacy Van Oast
P.S. Be sure not to miss our next meeting
on February 12, featuring an address on health care by former state rep John
Jamien!

Wanted - All Lovers of
Liberty!!!
This is an urgent notice! We need you, and we need you
now!
Hi!
I just wanted to remind you that, unless you act now,
this could be the last correspondence you receive from the Libertarians of
Macomb County. Don't let that happen!
As a local affiliate of the
Libertarian Party of Michigan, we rely on our members to support, finance, and
coordinate all of our activities. It is through our members that we nominate
candidates, get ideas, and maintain a libertarian presence in our own
hometowns. As a recent inquiry or a member who's membership has recently
expired, we have sent you at least one quarterly newsletter, several monthly
meeting reminders, and a renewal reminder if applicable.
Remember, your
$10 annual membership dues include a subscription to our informative quarterly
newsletter as well as monthly meeting reminders, so that you're sure not to
miss any exciting guest speakers. And, just as important, that $10 lets us know
that you're out there and that you're on our side!!
Your financial
contributions truly are vital to our existence, but so is your membership -
just knowing that you support what we are doing keeps us going. Please, renew
or join us now, by filling out the membership form on the back of this letter.
Or take a moment to let us know why you have chosen not to join us. We really
want to know. It really is an exciting time to be a Libertarian - so please -
join us now!
Yours for liberty,
Stacy Van Oast
Chair Libertarians of Macomb County
P.S. If you have recently
joined or renewed, thank you! Or, if your records indicate a different
membership status, please advise! In any case, Thank You!
Sample
letter asking for membership renewal
Dear
____________,
This is an URGENT message to all lovers of liberty!! We
need members, and we would love to have YOU back, NOW!
According to our
records, your annual membership dues were last paid on "Date Joined" and
therefore, your membership has now expired.
In addition to financing our
quarterly newsletters and monthly meeting reminders, your $10 minimum
contribution will be put to other good use:
*We purchase and distribute
literature about the Libertarian Party in general and about local candidates as
well at local fairs and events
*We ran 14 candidates (that's the most
state-wide) from Macomb County in the November election
*On November 20,
we hosted our first quarterly "Freedom Series" speech with Richard Ebeling,
professor from Hillsdale College and a vice president of the Future of Freedom
Foundation - the next in the series will be held at our February 12
meeting
*As you probably know, we just hosted a tremendously successful
fundraising banquet for Harry Browne and awarded four "Defender of Liberty"
awards to deserving individuals
*We are selling the wildly popular
"Freedom is Everything" T-shirts
*The LMC plans on doubling our
membership (at least!) by next December
As you can see, we are working
hard to promote liberty in Macomb County in lots of ways. All of these projects
are aimed at achieving our goals of raising money, recruiting members, and
getting Libertarian votes. Let's keep the pols watching our county, but not as
the "home of the Reagan-Democrats" - let's make Macomb County the home of the
independent, responsible, and principled Libertarians! Please, show us your
support and help us by renewing your membership now.
And by the way,
thank you very much for your past support. I really look forward to your
continued encouragement. After all, freedom really is everything.
Yours
in liberty, Stacy Van Oast, Chair
Sample letter acknowledging dues
payment
Dear
____________,
Hello! Welcome to the Libertarians of Macomb
County.
Thank you for joining or re-joining us! Your support - financial
as well as moral - is what keeps the concept of liberty going and growing. As
you know, we are an extremely active affiliate. With 16 people running for
public office on November 5th, we ran the most candidates of any affiliate in
the state. We hosted the state convention last April and the state-wide Liberty
Fest banquet with Harry Browne just a few weeks ago. The LMC attends as many
fairs and rallies that we can, which included Gunstock, Mt. Clemens Downtown
Days, Earthfest, and Brass Roots in 1996. Booths at these events provide an
excellent way of meeting people, introducing them to Libertariansim, raising
money, and attracting voters and new members.
I want to stress, though,
that it really is every one of our members that keeps our organization going -
whether you attend meetings, volunteer time, or simply pay your dues. Not
everyone is available to donate time or money all of the time or to attend
meetings regularly. The more members we have though, the more likely that every
once in a while, someone new will get some free time (ha ha!) and help us out.
Every member offers fresh ideas and enthusiasm that keep the momentum going.
So, again, welcome to the Libertarians of Macomb County. Your support
really means more than I can say. Thank you.
Yours in liberty, Stacy
Van Oast Chair
