(Livonia, MI) - At the 1996
Nominating Convention of the Libertarian Party of Michigan on April 20, a
platform was adopted which contains 15 planks, including a plank entitled
"Travel."
The
Travel plank begins: "Contrary to police propaganda, the opportunity for adult
citizens to travel public roads by contemporary means of transportation is not
a privilege granted by the state but rather a fundamental right of free
people." The Travel plank includes the statement: "Recognizing that individuals
must assume responsibility for their own safety, we oppose all mandatory laws
requiring the use of seat belts and helmets."
The
Libertarian Party is America's third largest political party. Its platform
advocates individual liberty and responsibility, respect for the Bill of
Rights, free enterprise, free trade, and no meddling overseas. The LP will be
running candidates for local, state, and federal offices in all 50 states in
November.
